Juanma Moreno, President of the Junta de Andalucía, has embarked on an institutional visit to China, aiming to bolster Andalusia’s presence in key industrial and tourism markets across Asia. Running until September 5, the mission is designed to position the autonomous region as an attractive hub for major Chinese corporations and affluent travelers.
This diplomatic endeavor unfolds amid ongoing trade tensions between China and the European Union. Despite these challenges, Andalusia has emerged as a strategic entry point for Chinese businesses, particularly in the renewable energy and automotive sectors. In recent years, the region has successfully attracted 15 Chinese business ventures, bringing an estimated €700 million in investments.
Strengthening industrial connections
One prominent example of the growing relationship between Andalusia and China is in Linares, where connections have been established with the Hengrui automotive company. Moreno’s visit includes planned meetings with leading industrial groups and influential local officials to further solidify these ties.
China already accounts for over €2 billion in annual imports to Andalusia, with machinery, household appliances, and electrical components leading the list of goods. However, a trade deficit of over €1 billion persists. On the export side, Andalusia has seen a notable uptick, with exports to China reaching €606 million in the first half of the year—an impressive 32% increase compared to the same period last year.
A packed agenda to boost trade and investment
During his stay, Moreno’s itinerary is focused on fostering collaboration in high-growth sectors. Highlights include a visit to Beijing’s Renewable Energy Technology Park and discussions with the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Meetings with corporate giants, including Huawei, and other prominent business leaders are also on the agenda.
Beyond Beijing, Moreno plans to travel to cities like Ningbo and Shanghai. These visits are pivotal in his strategy to deepen Andalusia’s trade ties and attract additional investments. By engaging with key decision-makers, Moreno seeks to expand the region’s economic footprint in China, particularly in advanced technology and industrial production.
